Science Faction
Curated by John Cino
November 9 – December 22, 2019
Artist Reception: November 9, 5:00 – 7:00PM

We live in a time where truth and fiction are blurred, where basic tenets of science are questioned, not for their efficacy but for political gain, when factions call empirical science fiction because it doesn’t jibe with their world view or satisfy their profit margin. The artists of Science Faction have chosen uniquely creative paths to examine the distinctions between empirical fact and wishful fiction.
Brandon Ballengée, a visual artist, biologist, and environmental educator based in Louisiana creates transdisciplinary artworks which are both beautiful and disquieting, inspired from his ecological field and laboratory research. He offers aesthetically pleasing images of the adverse effects of ecological disruption.

The work of Lauren Ruiz explores the intersection of fact and faith. She has created a narrative arc which begins with a futuristic world where plastic can be mined and used to replace human tissue. The products of her invented science are presented as religious iconography.
Combined these artists give us pause to consider our species’ relationship to its home.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, artistic developments in Northern and Central Italy (and beyond the Alps) saw the development of a new artistic language that culminated in the High Renaissance works of da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. This will be a discussion of that development from its earliest inception in Tuscany in the works of Pisano and Giotto, its expansion to Milan, Siena and Venice, then continuing through the invention of oil paint, ending in Rome where the Sistine Chapel's lower frescos marked the dawn of the High Renaissance.

Art Nouveau
The 1890’s were known as the Gay Nineties as a new sensibility swept across Europe and the US which brought with it new forms in art, architecture, graphic design, and the applied and decorative arts. The movement was known as Art Nouveau in France but distinctive variations such as Jugendstil in Germany, and Modernisme in Spain soon sprung up. Influential artists included Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha and Louis Tiffany. Portions of this discussion will be led by guests Jennifer Berotti and Eva Rodriguez-Greguski.

Oct. 24 - Nov. 8
@ the Michael Braceland Gallery in E.Patchogue

This informal cooperative exhibit is full of great work by Patchogue Arts Council artists who were not chosen to be in the "Piebald Patches" juried show,
