Efrat Baler-Moses
May 28 – August 31, 2024
Reception July 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM
Efrat (Effi) Baler-Moses is a Long Beach, NY-based multidisciplinary artist. She creates multidimensional hybrid constructions that evolve into sculptural paintings with layered meanings and forms, showcasing different perspectives simultaneously and offering viewers a dynamic experience. Influenced by diverse cultural experiences, Efrat’s themes emerge from current events, cultural trends, and social issues, often unveiling hidden narratives within seemingly ordinary objects, landscapes, and figures. Challenging traditional perspectives on painting, Efrat reimagines its presentation. Her works encourage active engagement, prompting viewers to move beyond passive frontal viewing and question established notions of what a painting is and can be, both within and beyond the confines of the wall.
About Efrat (Effi) Baler-Moses I am a multidisciplinary artist driven by concepts, transforming paintings into 3D sculptural forms and reliefs. My hybrid constructions blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture, expanding their spatial presence with unconventional elements and dimensions. These artworks defy traditional wall displays, incorporating three-dimensional elements that move on, beneath, or behind the canvas, sometimes revealing the canvas stretcher. They are presented on walls, stands, pedestals, turntables, or as floor-standing canvases, encouraging interactive engagement and challenging the static viewing habits of traditional art.
In response to evolving art consumption in the digital age, my work aims to disrupt the passive, frontal viewing experience, fostering a more dynamic interaction with the audience. By blending traditional techniques with non-traditional materials, I push the limits of painting while revealing layers of process and meaning within each piece. Influenced by diverse cultures and personal experiences, my artworks explore themes ranging from cultural trends to social issues, inviting viewers to interpret each piece through their own perspective.
Recent works draw inspiration from real-world events, such as the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, tragedy in Israel and Gaza conflict. These pieces delve into the hidden narratives of everyday objects and human experiences affected by violence and displacement, reflecting on themes of resilience and loss in the face of adversity.
Overall, my art challenges conventional notions of painting, offering a transformative viewing experience that extends beyond traditional confines, resonating with contemporary audiences amidst shifting attention spans and immersive technologies.
