PIXEL PIXIES: Toy MiniNatures explores the relationship between the real world and toys. Oftentimes, blurring the boundaries between the two and envisioning them interacting with one another. My photographs depict a miniature world of toys alongside nature’s elements and its inhabitants. This brings together the craftsmanship and beauty created by both humans and nature alike. I aim to tell a ‘toy story’ in every one of my shots and convey immersion in not only the surroundings, but expressions of my subjects in frame. With influences stemming from the world-building of J. R. R. Tolkien, Jim Henson and Hayao Miyazaki, I always try to create fantastical perspectives and challenge the viewer to see the world from a new ‘mini’ point of view.
Ever since I was a boy, I have been fascinated in these fantasy/anime/sci-fi genres. The notion of being transported to a new world, meeting our protagonist, and interacting through them with creatures derived from imagination excites me. My photography seeks to tap into that awe-struck excitement of its viewers and preserve/ invite it for all to see.
Andrew was born and raised on Long Island, NY. At an early age, he was drawn to the creative arts of film and photography. Capturing the real and unreal through art, to embody a world viewers have not yet experienced. He’s currently working as a remote video editor based in Medford having received an MFA in Cinema Arts from Feirstein’s Graduate School of Cinema in Brooklyn, NY. He enjoys storytelling while editing projects ranging from short-narrative, music, beauty and commercial work. Andrew enjoys unwinding in nature and visiting Long Island’s many state parks and nature preserves to gather thoughts and ideas for future toy & wildlife photography. While e considers himself self-taught, he has prior experience in the field, taking both traditional and digital photography classes in Pat-Med high and working as a staff photographer for his undergraduate school newspaper, The Fredonia Leader (2016-2017). Andrew also has been a contributer for New York’s largest online music source magazine: NYSMusic covering numerous performances and festivals all around Long Island including The Great South Bay Music Festival (2018/2019). His plans are to continue working and learning more about the ever changing landscape of film, television and photography while bringing joy to his viewers he engages with through his art of Toy MiniNatures.
