Since the ancients, people have wondered what the landscape looks like from above. Working in different media, the artists of Viewfrom Above offer their visions of the surface of our planet.

Photographer Alex Ferrone photographs in-flight from a helicopter. Avoiding representational elements, she observes surfaces and forms that become natural abstractions of land and water. Her images consider the fluidity of the land and sand as they are shaped intrinsically by both wind and water currents. Land is rendered above and below aqueous surfaces and is enhanced by both the reflectivity and transparency of the water.

In drawings and paintings, Tony Ingrisano considers the interface between human infrastructure: buildings, utilities, and transportation, and the natural geography into which they must fit. He keeps his feet on the ground and derives his imagery from maps of all kinds. The original cartographic abstractions are further abstracted through color, rearrangement, and an interplay of organic and geometric forms.

Winn Rea literally keeps her feet on the ground. Her mixed media works are inspired by places she has hiked. In her mixed media reliefs USGS topological maps are transferred onto birch ply where they are cut out and layered, returning the third dimension to the landscape. Color is applied recalling her sensations when hiking the location.

Our programs are possible because of the generous support of our main sponsors.
