One hundred years ago, in 1925, Surrealism emerged with its first exhibition. Central to early Surrealist practice was automatism—a method of making art in which the artist suppresses conscious control, allowing chance and intuition to guide the process. Artists often began with automatist gestures and then developed them into finished works.
In this same spirit, Exquisite Corpse was curated through a process that mirrors the Surrealist method. Half of the works were selected through an open call for artists employing automatist approaches, while the remaining artists were chosen by the curatorial team in direct response to the first group. In effect, the exhibition itself became a living practice of the Exquisite Corpse.
We extend our thanks to the curatorial team for embracing this meta-automatist approach in shaping the show.
The exhibition’s title is drawn from the well-known collaborative game Exquisite Corpse (cadavre exquis), in which folded drawings or phrases are completed sequentially by multiple participants without knowledge of the whole. The resulting hybrid figures and uncanny juxtapositions embody automatism’s embrace of chance and collective imagination—an especially fitting touchstone for this centenary.
