Performance art is all about the actions of the artist—and sometimes others—coming to life in front of an audience. With roots in avant-garde movements like Futurism and Dadaism, it gained popularity in the 1960s and ’70s, blending with body art, conceptual art, happenings, and video art.

Learning to Look | American Art of the 1930s & 40s
Sunday, December 15, 2024 @ 12 Noon
This special edition of Learning to Look is planned as part of the village-wide It’s a Wonderful Life in Patchoguecelebration! Join us at PAC • MoCA L.I. for a special talk with Prof. John Cino, who will discuss the art of the 1930s and 40s.
American Art in the 1930s and 40s
The film It’s a Wonderful Life was released in 1946, based on the short story The Greatest Gift written by Philip Van Doren Stern in 1939. Although released in the nascent post-war era, its themes are more closely associated with the pre-war 1930s. In this talk, we will examine the response by U.S. artists to the Depression Era as they sought to create a uniquely American story while confronting European Modernism.
