Paint the Great South Bay Plein Air Event and Wet Paint Sale 2015
The South Bay Artist Association (SBAA) is inviting artists to paint en plein air along theGreat South Bay, ranging from Smith Point Beach to West Sayville. There will also be maps handed out at check in for the event. Proceeds from this event will be used to fund future events within the SBAA organization, such as the Senior Show and scholarships.
Dates of the event: Thursday, August 20th, to Sunday, August 23rd. RAIN OR SHINE
South bay is one of those places so many people love and decide to relocate there. It’s for events just like this that people decide to move here. No wonder then that estate agent Maureen Megowan is able to find business in the local area!
Location: The Great South Bay on the South Shore of Long Island, which includes the towns/villages/areas of Bellport, East Patchogue, Patchogue, Blue Point, Bayport, Sayville, and West Sayville, NY, essentially the areas south of Sunrise Highway. The event will be limited to 40 plein air Artists age 18 and older on a first come first serve basis.
There will be a show to close out the plein air event. Artists are invited to bring their framed and ready to hang work to the Bellport Arts Gallery (formerly The Phoenix Gallery) at 139 S Country Road, Bellport, NY, on the evening of Saturday August 22nd from 7:00-9:00 PM. The Wet Paint Show and Sale will open on Sunday, August 23rd, from 12:00 PM-5:00 PM with the opening reception from 1:00-4:00 PM.
Rules for the Plein Air Event:
To be eligible to participate in the show, art must be done between August 20th and August 22nd. No work done with photo references will be permitted; all art must be completed en plein air during the outing. All artists must register prior to the weekend event and all canvas/paper, etc. needs to be stamped at check in for work to be eligible to be displayed in the Wet Paint Sale on Sunday.
All painting mediums will be accepted for the show and sale. Paintings should be properly framed and wire mounted, no hooks or brackets, and brought to the Bellport Arts Gallery on Saturday, August 23rd, from 7:00-9:00 PM. Canvases, paper, or other supports used that haven’t been stamped will not be permitted to enter into the sale. All paintings being entered into the show will be checked for the plein air stamp. Labels and other paperwork will be handed out when the artists check in on the 20th.
All art must be completed during the plein air outing and done on location on the South Shore. A Facebook group will be set up for artists to post their location so that spectators will know where the artists are painting.
ARTISTS MUST AGREE THAT ALL ART PAINTED DURING THE EVENT WILL BE SUBJECT TO THE 30% Commission. If you painting at a location and are approached by someone interested in purchasing the painting you are doing, that painting is under the contract of the event and the 30% commission must be paid to SBAA. Failure to pay the commission to SBAA will result in the artist being ejected from the event and any participation fees will be forfeited by the artist. NO EXCEPTIONS. This event is based on honor system and is relying on the INTEGRITY of the artists participating in this event. Artists are encouraged to submit 2 pieces.
You will be responsible for making arrangements to have your paintings picked up on September 27th between 12PM and 4PM on that Sunday. The Bellport Arts Gallery cannot store paintings, please make arrangements to have your unsold work picked up by 4PM on Sunday September 27th. SBAA and the Bellport Arts Gallery will not be responsible for work not picked up by 4PM on September 27th.
Plein Air Artists Must Agree to:
- Paint the Great South Bay on August 20th and 22nd, 2015
- Have their canvases and supports stamped BEFORE painting on them
- Attend the Reception on August 23rd from 1 to 4PM
- Remove unsold paintings by 4PM on September 27th
- Allow images of work entered into the Sale to be used by the South Bay Art Association for publicity purposes
-SBAA and the Bellport Arts Gallery will not be responsible for any personal injury, property loss or damage regardless of the cause during this event.
Plein Air Schedule
– Thursday, August 20th to Saturday, August 22nd – Artists Paint, Rain or Shine
– Saturday, August 22nd, 7-9 PM Artists drop off their work to the Bellport Arts Gallery at 139 South Country Road in Bellport
– August 23rd from 1-4 PM Opening Reception for the Paint the Great South Bay
– September 27th, Artist pick up any unsold paintings from the Bellport Arts Gallery from 12-4 PM.
Artists should complete the registration form and mail it in by July 15th. All applications must be accompanied by the non-refundable registration fee. Participating artists must agree to the terms and conditions of the Paint the Great South Bay Plein Air Event and
Wet Paint Sale. Once 40 artists have registered, there will be a waiting list created for those that wish to paint and show. Fees will not be held for those on the waiting list and payment will be due on Thursday, August 20 for those on the Waiting List. Information for Spectators, Patrons of Wet Paint Sale
The Plein Air Show will run from Monday, August 23rd to Saturday September 26th at the Bellport Arts Gallery, 139 S Country Road, Bellport, NY. Reception will be August 23rd, 2015 from 1-4PM. Each Artist will have the opportunity to submit two paintings into the sale. The Sale is open to the public.

Registration fee is non-refundable. $25.00 per person

By entering the Paint the Great South Bay Plein Air Event, I am affirming that I understand the terms and conditions outlined in the prospectus. I understand SBAA will not be responsible for bodily injury participating in the event, loss or damage to artwork or personal belongings, regardless of the cause. I also agree that images of work that I enter into the competition may be used by the SBAA for publicity purposes. I agree to behave in an ethical manner and I understand that all paintings done during the event and are offered up for sale are subject to the 30% commission and failure to comply with this will result in my being ejected from the event without refund.
