Learning to Look | Constructivism & Suprematism
Thursday, May 8, 2025 @ 6:30 PM
Constructivism & Suprematism | Russian Art Before and After the Revolution
The art of Russia in the first quarter of the 20th century tells a fascinating and cautionary tale. In the first decade, westward-looking artists created a new avant-garde. In the second decade, Russian modernists established the Rayonist, Cubo-Futurist, and Suprematist movements. Leading up to and following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Constructivists identified themselves as proletariat and dedicated their creativity to supporting the new Soviet state. The 1920s saw the Soviet regime impose a doctrine of Socialist Realism, which led to the departure of most important modernists.
