“These mixed media paintings are a part of a series of portraits that juxtapose realism and expressionism. I combine years of classical training with a pure gestural mark making inspired by the Expressionists of the 1950’s collage. I am constantly in search of new mediums and processes that can be synthesized into my works.
In this series the first mark on the substrate is a realist portrait that is chosen from the tight group of people I know. The rest is a stream of consciousness where I mix my mediums and vary my mark making. Many times I leave the thought and process of the work-process in the form of noticeable underdrawing.
Important to me is serendipity. Mistakes keep me interested, intellectually challenged, excited and interested. Sometimes my figure will completely disappear into abstraction. The challenge of bringing it back is fascinating to me. Objects and environments for my people are found in their natural spaces. Many of my subjects are artists so include their studio spaces and studio objects.
I attempt to work with a deep layered space and enjoy rendering my people’s objects trompe l’oeil. The objects in my paintings often take on a symbolist value. They can also sometimes take on a surrealist presence.”
