Learning to Look: The Art of the Earliest Civilizations
In the Fertile Crescent of the ancient Near East and along the Nile two unique civilizations were born over five thousand years ago, each marked by advances in metallurgy, large hierarchal political units, occupational specialization and most importantly the advent of writing and the recording of history. Art and architecture were tools in maintaining rigid social structures. Further east in India a parallel culture flourished which remains mute as there has not yet been a ‘Rosetta Stone’ to decode its writing.
