Learning to Look: A History of African American Art
During Reconstruction communities of color flourished and with them artists found an outlet for their creativity. Silenced by the years of Jim Crow their voices would rise again during the Harlem Renaissance and were heard anew throughout urban America and create a wake through their children among the Jacob Lawrence which lead to the civil rights movement. By the 1960’s African American culture was celebrated by artists of color who would also offer chilling commentary on racial injustice, themes which have continued to reverberate to the present.
