Searching for a phrase that best describes my work I have settled on ‘dynamic systems’. Much like the union of feminine and masculine, yin and yang, I create systems of connections in a variety of media which evolve into something new. Through events, musical productions and art exhibitions, in real space and the virtual world artists and musicians are brought together in a way in which they and the audience will experience a new creation. I consider these activities as non-local or non-material extensions of my sculptural work.
My material, localized work, sculptures address the concept of dynamic systems in multiple ways. In carving wood I am part of a system which includes artist and material, that material itself is part of a system of life and growth which offers its history recorded in a grain pattern. The material and the artist harmonize to create the final sculptural object which evokes in the viewer multiple associations, life in motion, growth, and evolution. Each of these in turn are systems which include the living object and its physical and temporal environment.
As life adapts, grows and evolves it is in effect communicating with its environment and anyone who knows the language could read its story. And so my work has evolved to include language and its delivery systems. Language is also a living system. Its structures are letters, words, books and libraries, all of which have become subjects of recent works.
Words can also be sounds and we have come full circle of systems within systems.
