Thursday, April 10, 2025 @ 6:30 PM
Fiber Art refers to fine art created from natural or synthetic fibers, often but not always woven into fabric or textiles. Functional or decorative fiber works have been produced globally for millennia. In the West, Fiber Arts were considered a minor or craft art until the 1960s, when Fiber Artists began creating nonfunctional forms. In this talk, we will explore the global and historical reach of Fiber Arts before examining the many varied ways modern and contemporary artists have used fiber to make art.

Constructivism & Suprematism | Russian Art Before and After the Revolution
The art of Russia in the first quarter of the 20th century tells a fascinating and cautionary tale. In the first decade, westward-looking artists created a new avant-garde. In the second decade, Russian modernists established the Rayonist, Cubo-Futurist, and Suprematist movements. Leading up to and following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Constructivists identified themselves as proletariat and dedicated their creativity to supporting the new Soviet state. The 1920s saw the Soviet regime impose a doctrine of Socialist Realism, which led to the departure of most important modernists.
