Automatism

One hundred years ago, 1925 saw the development and first exhibition of Surrealism. A key concept in early Surrealism was automatism a method of making art in which the artist suppresses conscious control often allowing chance occurrences to guide the art making process. Most often the artist would begin with automatist processes and then adapt them into a final piece.
Automatism will factor into this exhibition in two ways:
MoCA LI is asking for artists who work with an automatist process to submit works for this exhibition.
*Submission deadline for this exhibition is early to allow time to seek complimentary
work for the final exhibition. Late submissions will not be considered.
Submission deadline: June 15 (midnight)
Notification: July 1, 2025
Delivery of works : September 15, 2025
Important Information
Submission Details & Guidelines
Submissions must include an artist statement & bio, an artist resume/cv is optional
All Files should be labeled with the artist’s name and title of work. example:Yourname_titleofwork.jpg
Please submit only completed work, no works-in-progress, and indicate the size of the work
All work must be ready to hang.
Submission Deadline: JUNE 15, 2025 midnight
July 1 | Artist Notifications – A Patchogue Arts Council representative will notify all artists via email and/or phone once artwork is selected. Please do not call for notifications.

All artists selected for the exhibition must make arrangements for their artwork to be picked up at MoCA L.I.
Requirements & Restrictions
• All work that is to be hung on walls must be wired/ready to hang.
• There is no fee to submit work.
• Two and three-dimensional work will be accepted.
• Artists may submit two (3) works of art for consideration.
• All artists must submit a release form.
